AWS fly the flag for headbangers with 'screaming pop song' Viszlát nyár

Thursday 10th May 2018

If you enjoy the heavier side of heavy music, the Eurovision Song Contest isn’t usually the first place you would look for it.

However this year one band is flying the flag for headbangers across Europe.

AWS, representing Hungary, are getting ready to shred the Eurovision stage in Saturday's grand final with their heavy but catchy Viszlát nyár (goodbye summer) after qualifying in semi-final 2.

The band gained support following  the performance the five-piece put on the Eurovision Village stage earlier this week (see below).

But what made a modern metal band from Hungary want to take part in a traditionally more pop and dance competition?

To bring something a little different to Eurovision, says lead singer Örs Siklósi.

“We wrote the song last summer and our manager said, ‘hey guys what do you think about Eurovision’ and we thought yes, why not see how it goes," he said. "We sent it to the Hungarian Eurovision competition and we won.

“I think our song makes us stand out from the competition. People like it. I think it is quite different than the other songs. I mean it's heavy. It's a screaming pop song.”

Sung in Hungarian, the lyrics may escape most British fans, but Örs explains it is a very personal song to him which he wrote following the death of his father.

He said: “The song is about to losing somebody that you really love. It's about the connections between life and death and the fact we have to speak about death because it will lead to a happier life.

“I lost my father one year ago and the song is saying that you have to be positive. It’s saying that you don’t have to cry about losing somebody—you have to get over it because this is the meaning of life.”

Örs, along with Bence Brucker, Dániel Kökényes, Áron Veress and Soma Schiszler, are all big fans of heavy music and class the UK as their ‘extended’ home.

Örs said: “We have played in London three times. We played Camden Town at different clubs and it was so good.

“We always say in Hungary that London is the second biggest Hungarian city in the world.”

The band started out in 2006 and were inspired by all the heavy metal rock stars of the 70s and 80s, and the nu metal bands of the 90s and 2000s.

“We were friends and studied in the same high school and every one of us was a big metal fan,” explained Örs. “Our heroes were metal heads and rock stars so it was the only music that we wanted to play.

“We love the old time favourites, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Led Zeppelin, the classics. And after that we started to listen to to many great nu metal and metalcore bands like Linkin Park, Korn, Limp Bizkit and Killswitch Engage and As I Lay Dying.”

Speaking of life after Eurovision, the band hope to work their way up to big European festivals, including Download in the UK.

Örs said: “We haven’t played there—yet. We just played in a Hungarian festival so maybe this summer we will visit other countries. Maybe one day we will visit download festival.”

The Eurovision Song Contest grand final will air on Saturday (May 12) on BBC One from 8pm.
