Dalton Harris heads for Christmas number one after winning the X Factor 2018

Monday 3rd December 2018

Dalton Harris has been crowned winner of the X Factor.

The bookies’ favourite beat Scarlett Lee and Anthony Russell to win a recording deal with Simon Cowell's label Syco Music.

The Jamaican-born singer was so stunned when he was announced the victor, he simply said: “I just won the X Factor.”

Dalton's mentor, former One Direction star Louis Tomlinson, jumped to his aid, telling the crowd: "He's been such a pleasure to work with, a true gentleman."

The 24-year-old is now heading for the Christmas number one spot, with his version of Frankie Goes To Hollywood's hit track The Power Of Love (see video below).

His odds have been cut to around 6/1, making him third favourite for the accolade, behind Ariana Grande (2/1) and Ava Max (5/2).

Lee came second in the ITV1 show and Russell was placed third.

It isn’t the first time Dalton has succeeded at a singing competition—eight years ago he won a talent competition called Digicel Rising Stars in Kingston, Jamaica.

He claimed the prize money of one million Jamaican dollars, equivalent to more than £6,000.

After a number one single, Pauper, Harris went on to release three albums, but his popularity was short lived.

He decided to travel over to the UK to audition for the X Factor in a bid to kick start his career again.

Judges Robbie Williams, Ayda Field, Louis Tomlinson and Simon Cowell were all impressed with his performance of Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word by Elton John, gaining him four 'yeses'.

The finale capped a star-studded evening that included performances from Rodgers, Goulding and Take That with Robbie Williams.
