I'm a Celebrity: Autistic boy's letter of support to Anne Hegerty goes viral

Tuesday 20th November 2018

A young boy has sent a heartfelt letter to Anne Hegerty after she shared her experience of autism.

Joseph Hughes, 11, from Preston, Lancs, was diagnosed with autism aged five, and his words have been shared thousands of times on social media.

The youngster, who goes to a special school, explains that “sometimes people are mean” to him, but Anne opening up about her experience has given him hope that “maybe I can have a cool job like you when I’m older”.

Hegerty, who has Asperger's syndrome and is best known as The Governess on ITV gameshow The Chase, spoken openly with Eastenders star Rita Simons on Monday night’s show about her personal struggles.

According to the NHS, the condition can affect a person's social interactions, communication, interests and behaviour.

Joseph said: “I was diagnosed with autism when I was 5. I like to watch you on The Chase and now I have been watching you in the jungle. I couldn’t go there because there are too many bugs. You are very clever.

“Sometimes people are mean to me because I am autistic but watching you makes me see that other people can have autism too and maybe I can have a cool job like you when I am older.”

The youngster goes on to ask the 60-year-old whether she likes Thunderbirds, and explains to her that he has drawn her a picture of his favourite, Thunderbird 2.
