Idris Elba is the new favourite to be next James Bond following reports that movie bosses are ‘leaning towards’ the Luther star.
The movie’s franchise chief Barbara Broccoli, 58, apparently told director Antoine Fuqua that “it is time” for the famous spy to be played by a black actor once Daniel Craig, 50, steps down from the role.
Bookmakers have slashed the odds for Elba to step into the famous shoes, likely to be following the 25th anniversary film which is due out next year.
Paddy Power has today suspended betting on the 45-year-old after his odds went in from 10/1 to 2/1 favourite yesterday, ahead of previous market leaders Tom Hardy and James Norton.
Spokesman Paddy Power said: “A hint from the James Bond producer, some weighty bets and the fact that Idris Elba is one of the coolest men on the planet has forced us to stop taking bets on him for the next James Bond.
“We’re now convinced that he’s going to take over from Daniel Craig following Bond 25. From Hackney with Love.”
This is the result of reports by the Daily Star that Fuqua spoke of his conversation with Broccoli, who is sure the move “will happen eventually”, with Elba the apparent frontrunner for the role.
He said: “Idris could do it if he was in shape. You need a guy with physically strong presence. Idris has that.”
