Luther star Idris Elba favourite to be the next James Bond

Friday 10th August 2018

Idris Elba is the new favourite to be next James Bond following reports that movie bosses are ‘leaning towards’ the Luther star.

The movie’s franchise chief Barbara Broccoli, 58, apparently told director Antoine Fuqua that “it is time” for the famous spy to be played by a black actor once Daniel Craig, 50, steps down from the role.

Bookmakers have slashed the odds for Elba to step into the famous shoes, likely to be following the 25th anniversary film which is due out next year.

Paddy Power has today suspended betting on the 45-year-old after his odds went in from 10/1 to 2/1 favourite yesterday, ahead of previous market leaders Tom Hardy and James Norton.

Spokesman Paddy Power said: “A hint from the James Bond producer, some weighty bets and the fact that Idris Elba is one of the coolest men on the planet has forced us to stop taking bets on him for the next James Bond.

“We’re now convinced that he’s going to take over from Daniel Craig following Bond 25. From Hackney with Love.”

This is the result of reports by the Daily Star that Fuqua spoke of his conversation with Broccoli, who is sure the move “will happen eventually”, with Elba the apparent frontrunner for the role.

He said: “Idris could do it if he was in shape. You need a guy with physically strong presence. Idris has that.”

James Bond 25, directed by Danny Boyle, is due for UK release on October 25, 2019

It is widely accepted to be Craig's fifth and final outing as the MI6 agent, after Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, and Spectre.

Coral's Harry Aitkenhead said: ”We've been inundated with bets over the last 24 hours on Idris Elba to be the next James Bond and the odds have tumbled as a reaction.

“He's now our favourite, and it's the first time in twelve months that neither Hardy or Norton has been top of the list to replace Craig.”
