Coronation Street has emerged as the early favourite to win the best serial drama gong at the National Television Awards.

Paddy Power has listed the soap as the 13/8 front-runner following a year of hard-hitting storylines, including the murderous spree of notorious baddie Pat Phelan and David Platt’s male rape (see below for odds).

This would be the first time Corrie has won the award since 2014, with Emmerdale – rated 5/2 – winning the last two. Of those nominated, Hollyoaks is rated least likely to scoop the gong at 5/1.

Spokesman Paddy Power said: “Coronation Street’s hard-hitting plot choices have attracted a lot of attention this year, including plenty of Ofcom complaints. But, we think their decision to air the dramatic storylines will play in their favour when it comes to awards season.

“The NTA nominations were announced this week ahead of the ceremony in January 2019, and already we’ve seen a lot of action from punters who believe the award is on the way to the cobbles.”

Elsewhere in the long list, released by the NTAs this week, Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker is up for best drama performance, Ant and Dec are up for a best presenter award despite the former being on a career break, for most of the year.

All Together Now, Britain's Got Talent, Dancing On Ice, Strictly Come Dancing, The Voice Kids, The Voice UK and The X Factor are all in the running for best talent show.

The shortlist will be announced in January when the final round of voting begins.

Winners will be announced at the glitzy ceremony on January 22, 2019 at the O2 London.
