Peter Capaldi sends charming letter to young Doctor Who fan worried about regeneration

Thursday 28th December 2017

Outgoing Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi has written a charming letter to a nine-year-old fan who was scared about his regeneration.

The Twelfth Doctor hand wrote the letter, which he sent to David McGilloway, from Londonderry, along with a signed postcard and hand drawn picture of a Dalek.

Capaldi tried to reassure the youngster, explaining to him that while regeneration was “a little bit icky”, it “always, always turned out good” for the Time Lord.

He even dated the letter November 23, 1963 – the premiere date of the first time Doctor Who aired on the BBC.

The 58-year-old, who has played the Doctor since 2013, retired from the role on the Christmas Day special Twice Upon a Time to make way for Jodie Whittaker’s incarnation.

The young fan’s delighted father, Brian McGilloway, posted an image of the letter, postcard and envelope on Twitter, with the message: “#PeterCapaldi is my 9 year old son’s fav #DoctorWho and he was dreading his regeneration. And then he got this letter with some words of comfort from the Doctor himself among his Santa presents. Such a kind man.”

In the letter, Capaldi said: “Regenerating is not completely good fun. And it usually happens about xmas time. But you know what? Even though it can b a little bit icky (like really bad flu) I has aways, always turned out good for Doctor Who.”

He continued: “It’s like the Doctor says, ‘everything ends and it’s always sad. But everything begins again and that’s always happy. Be happy.”

David's older brother Tom also received a letter from the Doctor.

Fans of the show watched in shock as Capaldi’s regeneration into the first female Doctor ended on a cliffhanger as the Tardis spun out of control and Whittaker’s character fell out of the doors and towards earth.
