Strictly Come Dancing’s biggest ever controversies

Wednesday 21st November 2018

This year has seen the Strictly Come Dancing curse strike all over again, with one contestant and his professional dance partner caught locking lips, despite the pair both already being in relationships.

The whole fiasco got us looking back at some of the biggest controversies to have come out of the dancing competition throughout the years, and some of them are so shocking we’re surprised we ever forgot about them...

1. Katya Jones and Seann Walsh kiss

We start with the aforementioned fling, which saw contestant Seann and his professional dance partner Katya caught by photographers smooching outside of a London pub. The 32-year-old comedian was at the time dating his girlfriend of five years, actress Rebecca Humphries, whilst Katya is married to fellow Strictly star Neil Jones.

Whilst the pair have apologised for their actions, and Neil and Katya’s marriage seems to have survived past the kiss, Rebecca took to social media to announce she wouldn’t be staying with her unfaithful partner. In her statement, she slammed Seann as “controlling” and said that she had previously questioned his “inappropriate, hurtful behaviour.”

It’s recently also been reported that Seann had been on a string of secret dates with I’m A Celebrity campmate and Inbetweeners star Emily Atack whilst he was still with Rebecca. We’d say she’s better off without the comedian by her side…

2. Arlene Phillips being dropped from the judging line-up

Though it’s something the BBC have denied ever since Arlene left the show, many thought that the reason the network decided to get rid of the star was because of her age and gender. The drama even made its way into government chambers, with MPs discussing how differently women of a certain age were treated in various industries when compared to their male counterparts.

Arlene was replaced by Alesha Dixon on the panel, whose only dancing experience came from her pop career and her Strictly win in an earlier series. Very strange stuff indeed.

3. Anton Du Beke’s 'racist banter'

With Moroccan and Indian parents, Laila Rouass has likely faced her fair share of discrimination, and so when she heard some incredibly racist words come from her professional partner’s mouth, she is said to have run out of the room crying.

Anton is said to have commented that Laila “looked like a p**I” after a spray tan, later claiming his words were part of the “banter” the two shared.

He would apologise and insist he wasn’t racist, and didn’t usually “use racist language”, even managing to escape the firing that he would likely be handed if such an event occurred today. Laila accepted the apology, eventually finishing in fourth place alongside Anton, but didn’t return for the show’s final, with no reason given for her absence…

4. Fern Britton’s accusations against Artem Chigvintsev

As one of the most beloved faces in British television, fans were aghast to hear Fern’s accusations against her professional dance partner Artem. She said that the pro would “kick” and “shove” her backstage during rehearsals, and at one point claims he told her: “Shut your face. Go home before I kill you.”

Artem denied everything, saying he treated Fern with “respect and genuine care”. He said he was shocked to hear her statements, and claimed he couldn’t imagine what prompted the move. Only these two will ever know what really happened behind-the-scenes!

5. Ben Cohen’s affair with Kristina Rihanoff

Kristina has had quite the tumultuous time when it comes to tabloid reports, but you can’t really complain about the red tops and their coverage of her sudden relationship with Ben during the pair’s partnering up on Strictly. At the time, Ben was married, and Kristina had already had a fling with a former contestant, when Joe Calzaghe took part in the competition.

Though it will have been hurtful for Ben’s wife at the time, Ben and Kristina ARE still together, proving that their romance was more than just a flash in the pan. The two have a child together and look to be enjoying a happy and peaceful life. Let’s hope it continues!
