Yay or neigh? Hollyoaks' Jennifer Metcalfe uses 'Tinder' to pick Grand National horse

Tuesday 10th April 2018

It’s Grand National week and if, like us, you struggle to pick your horse each year, Hollyoaks star Jennifer Metcalfe has the answer.

The soap actress has picked her winner by using Mane Match, an app that helps you pick the steed that best suits you (think Tinder for horse racing fans).

The app paired her with Shantou Flyer – dressed in beige silks, grey epaulets and a beige cap – who has finished second in his last four races and is a bit of a dark horse with the bookmakers at around 33/1.

Also catching Jennifer’s eye is Childrens List – in pink silks with green spots – after the 35-year-old gave birth to her first child last year.

Jennifer, who plays Mercedes McQueen on the Channel 4 soap, said: “The Randox Health Grand National is one of my favourite days of the year and it’s made even better if you can pick the winner.

“With 40 runners it’s hard to make your mind up on just one but after a few swipes on the Mane Match app I was pleased to be paired with Shantou Flyer. Childrens List is a nice back up to have too.”

The app includes a bio of all 40 horses taking part and a clue to its chances, with users given the option to swipe left and right through all of the profiles to find their ultimate match.

You can find your perfect horse by using filters based on name, age, silks colour and odds and then swiping left or right – or in equine terms ‘yay’ or ‘neigh’ – through the profiles.

Jennifer explained: “Loads of people pick their National horse based on the name and colour I’m not too different.

“The app lets you narrow down the runners based on the name and colour and, given I’m a big fan of flying off to see exciting new places in the world, Shantou Flyer is definitely my type.

“I was drawn to the neutral colours too, they look nice and classy.”

Rod Street, Chief Executive of Great British Racing, said: “The Randox Health Grand National is the most famous horserace in the world and one of the few events that stops the nation.

“Part of the excitement is choosing your fancy from the 40 runners and with Mane Match back for its second year running, it’s a fun and easy way of narrowing down the search for your perfect horse. Good luck.”
