Susan Boyle |Britain's Got Talent |Runner Up

Susan Boyle

Susan Boyle is of the most extraordinary phenomenons to come out of Britain's Got Talent. She was an unexpected star whose initial audition was met with derision by Simon Cowell because the way she looked. That is of course, until she started to sing.

On April 11, 2009 a rather raggedy looking Scots woman took to the stage to sing I Dreamed A Dream from Les Miserables and within minutes of her finishing the YouTube hits of her performance were in their millions. In fact it was later reported that her Cry Me A River video was watched 100 million times and her debut album I Dreamed A Dream became the biggest selling UK debut album. Subsequently the success of her two further albums, The Gift and Someone To Watch Over Me has led to an accrued wealth of £22million.

The week following her first audition Boyle appeared live on the Oprah Winfrey Show in the US and by satellite on Good Morning America and The Larry King Show. Her meteoric rise from nowhere led to some concerns about her health, but she took some time out to re-group and was able to take advantage of her enthusiastic following.

What is perhaps even more extraordinary is that Susan Boyle did not win Britain's Got Talent – she came runner up to the dance troupe Diversity. Speculation about this was rife at the time, some believing that because the viewers thought her win was inevitable they didnt bother to vote and others believing that because she had already secured fame and a future that it was only fair that someone else should have a slice of the pie.

Both Susan Boyle and Diversity have maintained their careers since appearing on Britain's Got Talent.
