Strictly Come Dancing Winner Chris Hollins

Chris Hollins with professional Ola Jordan won Strictly Come Dancing in 2009.

BBC Breakfast TV Sports presenter Chris did not look like the natural winner of the series at the outset, but his following from his day job helped his popularity grow as the weeks passed.

In meeting the physical and technical challenges of the show he was also impressive in his willingness to tackle the artistic expression that was clearly not an inherent skill. His sense of fun and fair play mixed with obvious humility made him a winner with the voters even though he was pitted against Ricky Whittle in the final.

Whittle was the one to beat from the outset, starting out and remaining favourite with the bookies right through the series. With an unfortunate publicity blip in towards the end of the show when he spent a night in police cells after an alleged drunken incident the balance between the two competitors was finally weighted towards Hollins.

Chris Hollins' Charleston was the dance that really showboated his character and with fun and exuberance he won any remaining votes that were going.

As ever the winner this year proved once again that the public does not vote for technical excellence, Whittle was undoubtedly the better dancer but likeability and modesty will always sway the TV audiences.
