Simon Cowell | Pop Idol | The X Factor | Sony BMG | Syco

Simon Cowell

Simon Cowell and The X Factor are synonymous with each other. Without Cowell there would be no X Factor, without The X Factor there would be no Cowell.

He started his career working in the mail room for EMI and gradually worked his way through the ranks creating a successful working partnership with Pete Waterman of Stock/Aitken/Waterman fame, eventually becoming one of the top executives at Sony BMG.

His TV personna was born on the BBC's Pop Idol where as a judge, his honest but blunt critique of the contestants was a crowd pleaser, a crowd outrager, but above all, a crowd puller.

Taking his newly acquired public profile to ITV, he developed The X Factor format wth hs own production company Syco and became the frontman for the most successful Saturday night show that ITV had seen in years, with advertisers outbidding each other for sponsorship rights and ad breaks.

Simon Cowell's fame and fortune grew exponentially with the programme. Syco automatically signs the winner of the programme and Sony BMG has first option on all of the contestants who reach the live shows.

Whilst his success cannot be denied there are a growing nuber of voices in the music industry who feel that his stranglehold on the charts nullifies flair and innovation and that his show is far too formulaic. With the number of viewers tuning in to watch , the most lucrative Christmas Number One slot, timed to coincide with the X Factor final was practically guaranteed to go to the winner, but now in recent years there have been active and successful campaigns to avert this by 'Rage Against The Machine' and even some Facebook campaigns.

Stepping down from the UK show in 2011 and handing over the reins of Top Judge to Gary Barlow was a prudent although risky decision, which seems to have guaranteed the programme more longevity than otherwise seemed possible.

UK viewers have also become used to seeing him on Britain's Got Talent, which allows for a broader talent base where his critical forte is applied to a range of acts from dog trainers to jugglers.
